Rapists Allegedly Marry Teenage Victims to Evade Punishment in Algeria & Tunisia
In Algeria and Tunisia, the law allegedly prevents rapists from being prosecuted, if they marry their victim – if the victim is under age 18, according to Amnesty International
Although marriage can’t occur without the victim’s consent, the girls generally face pressure from family and society to marry her assailant in order “to protect the honor of the family,” Tunisia Live reports.
Morocco once had a similar law, however; it was abolished in January 2014, after a 16-year-old girl, Amina Filali, committed suicide after being forced to marry a man who raped her.
