Onitsha residents protest alleged killing of traffic officer



Residents of the commercial city of Onitsha yesterday went on rampage over the alleged killing of an operative of the Anambra State Traffic Agency, ASTA, by a driver.
It was gathered that during the crisis, the driver, who was alleged to have strangled the traffic officer to death as he forcefully drove the deceased from Ihiala, where their problem started to Onitsha, where he (the traffic officer) was found dead, had his trailer destroyed.
It was learnt that the protest, which simultaneously took place at the Old Motor Spare Parts, Mgbuka, along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway and the Upper Iweka-Niger Head Bridge, all within the commercial city.
Sources said that the Upper Iweka protest started when a trailer driver, who hails from an undisclosed state in the northern part of the country, allegedly abducted and killed a staff of the Anambra State Transport Agency, ASTA, at Ihiala in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
According to sources, the driver was flagged down by the deceased at a road block in Ihiala and the driver refused to stop, which led to the ASTA operative to jump into the trailer and the driver immediately zoomed off and drove the said traffic officer to Onitsha, where he was eventually caught at the Head Bridge by operatives who had been alerted about the incident.
Furthermore, it was gathered that when the operatives searched the vehicle, they discovered the lifeless body of the ASTA man with his hands tied behind him and fresh blood gushing out from his mouth and other parts of his body, where there were injuries.
Immediately information about the incident broke out, Igbo youths in the area went on rampage, setting the trailer ablaze, while the driver was lucky to escape as soldiers reportedly whisked him away in their operational vehicle to avoid being lynched.
A there was no Hausa man killed during the protest, non-natives, especially those of northern extraction, residents in Onitsha started scampering for safety as they left the city in droves, taking refuge at police stations and the 302 Artillery Regiment in the city.
Meanwhile, MASSOB Director of Information, Uchenna Madu, denied MASSOB’s involvement in the traders’ protest, adding that it was purely a traders’ affair, who he said had been deprived of their means of livelihood.
